Algerian Conquest: Expansion Wars
As discussed in my previous ALMOST post, I am currently burning with enthusiasm for embarking on collecting and wargaming with armies for the French conquest of Algeria in the 1830s and 40s.
Before continuing, I might say that I started this passion project from a fascination for the French Foreign Legion but by this time in my research I have very much become impressed and fascinated more with the desperate and often herioc resistance of the Algerian Berber and Bedouin warriors. I will enjoy building both sides.
I will be using the rules, Fortune and Glory - Breechloading and Rifled (F&G-BR) by Andrew Parr (copyright 2009) which are free to download from the Elite Miniatures Australia website - thankyou Nathan and Andrew. For my particular campaign, I have designed suggested army lists for Algerian Beylik armies, the forces of Abdelkader and the French colonial armies for 1834-1840.
There are no publications that I know of which cover this early conquest period, there are no army lists and no uniform guides. Having said that, there might have been something generated in the 1970s or 80s by Wargames Research Group - I mean, they covered just about everything didn't they?
So, I've written an Algerian Expansion Wars 1834-1840 treatment which covers a brief historical reference to the leaders and F&G-BR army lists for the early conquest period. Please find it at the end of the following link:

Following on from this will be an accompanying post covering the Chasseurs d'Afrique specific to this period.
