Argives are Done Done: Hoplites

First pictured are my Argive citizen elite phalanx who I gave partial or partly white shield edges. A colourful lot.

I would normally have made these units three deep but my older Spartan army is ranked only two deep and as I vowed to buy no figures in 2024, I'm stuck with it.

The Argive general (King?) is the chappie with the transverse blue and white crest, just left of centre. These fearsome murderers are almost as good as the Spartiates they will be up against.

Next up are the Argolid hoplites who are distinguished by their bronze shield rime and their standing pose. Of course, I've labelled them anyway.

Lastly, I created a more flexible phalanx of what I deem are Perioeci hoplites.

These chaps are designed to match up against the Spartans Helot Ekdromoi hoplites who are capable of skirmishing. My Perioeci hoplites are getting a special rule of Mixed Order (taken across from Black Powder Napoloeonics).

I deem them similar to Napoleonic light infantry. They can change formation (1 move) and deploy skirmishers to their front (within 6") who fight as peltasts at a combat value of 2. They screen the phalanx from the front, presenting an unclear target.

If the unit is charged into contact; however, the skirmishers retract automatically but the unit must pass a command roll or loses the Phalanx special rule until they pass a break test or win a round of combat. Alternatively, I could make them Disordered.

Well that's it. They are done in time for an Easter wargame.

  1. A cracking looking army Greg…
And you certainly got them painted in no time at all…
Washes, glazes and transfers are definitely they way to go…

    All the best. Aly

    1. Thanks Aly. It's a small sense of achievement that one of my many armies is now done.
